Formal notice

« Back to Glossary Index

A formal notice of demand is a written and formal request for payment. It specifies the amount owed, the deadline granted, and the intended consequences (legal collection proceedings). It is generally sent by certified mail, either in paper or electronic form, which provides a definite date of delivery.

Example

After several unsuccessful reminders, the supplier sent a formal notice: “If payment of €8,450 is not received within 8 days, we will take the matter to court.” The customer paid on the 6th day.

Why It’s Important

This is the final step in the amicable resolution process. It demonstrates that the company is serious, and it is generally a prerequisite before initiating legal proceedings, such as a payment order.
